Overview:
A&N is a family-owned business that started in Richmond, Virginia more than 130 years ago. In 1868, just after the Civil War was over, Lena Rose Sternheimer and her husband, Mark, opened a dry goods store in downtown Richmond. In 1904, a new warehouse was built at 420 Brook Road on the site of what was then called One Mile Tavern as it was the main road to downtown Richmond and exactly one mile from Capitol Square. The business was continued on under the leadership of Fred Sternheimer until he was joined by his brother, Nathan, in 1913 at which time they formed a partnership called Sternheimer Bros. After WWI the company purchased a large quantity of military clothing and hardware. Their mail order business sold this material under the name of Army and Navy Supply Company. This name was later changed to A&N Stores. The partnership became a corporation in 1930. After World War II, the sons of the founders, Lewis and Mark, continued the business. Lewis retired in 1980 and now Mark is president and owner. Ross Sternheimer, his son, is vice-president. By 1948, the company was no longer in the surplus business and had converted entirely into new commercial clothing, Boy Scout equipment, footwear, hunting rifles and clothing, and other specialty items.
