| Overview: Dakota Heritage State Bank has been serving the financial needs of this community for over 100 years. The bank was organized on May 26, 1904, and was formerly known as Chancellor State Bank. In 1973, Roger McKellips, a banker and politician from Alcester South Dakota, and Merlyn Sommervold, Roger's son-in-law, purchased the controlling interest in the bank. Merlyn became the managing officer. Sommervold began his banking career in 1962, and worked for Northwestern National Bank in Sioux Falls for 12 years before coming to Chancellor. Sommervold was excited about the move and the opportunities with managing his own bank. In 1975, a new bank building was built on Main Street Chancellor. Growth at the new location took off at a phenomenal rate, as the community in this small town began to feel confident about the new changes taking place. The name change came in 1984. It was at that time that Chancellor State Bank became Dakota Heritage State Bank. And in 1987, Dakota Heritage State Bank in Chancellor expanded its main office location with its first remodeling project at the bank. New office space was added, and additional staff hired to serve the community's banking needs. | |
