| Overview: Diabetes Technology Society is a non-profit educational organization whose mission is to support development and utilization of new technology to help people with diabetes. Diabetes affects over 20 million Americans and 200 million people worldwide. Considering the large number of people affected, the long duration of disease in each affected person, and the constant daily interference with eating, exercise, work and sleep due to fluctuations in blood glucose levels, the total burden of diabetes probably exceeds that of every other disease. Diabetes is the leading cause of blindness, end stage renal failure, and amputations. People with diabetes have a threefold increased incidence of heart attack and stroke. There is no cure for diabetes because only a healthy human pancreas produce sufficient insulin at the proper times to control the blood glucose levels and the pancreas cells in diabetes are irreversibly damaged. A cure for diabetes will require radical modification of human tissue, and will derive from biological research. A cure might involve gene therapy to create new pancreas cells, stem cell therapy to create new pancreas cells, transplant technology to insert functional pancreas cells, or modification of the immune system to avoid damage to existing pancreas cells. These approaches are very far from fruition and have not been successful to date for any diseases. Recent research by bioengineering community is leading to products made from non-living materials,... | |
