| Overview: In the mid 1970s, African American employees of Montgomery County founded the Minority Employees Association. The organization was renamed the African American Employees Association in 1990. That year AAEA established the Black Employees Success Team (B.E.S.T.) as a mentoring program to increase career options, educational readiness, and professionalism among aspiring County employees. To recognize the academic accomplishments of African American students and promote higher education, the association introduced the John C. Murray Scholarship in 1989. Since 1992, AAEA has sponsored events celebrating African and African American history and culture. Programs are held annually to commemorate Kwanzaa in December and Black History month in February. | |
