Ballard House is named in honor of Martha Ballard, a midwife who attended over 800 births in the late 1700's and early 1800's in the Augusta/Hallowell area of Maine. Our birth center is dedicated to her memory and formidable abilities. Founded on the guidelines established by the National Association of Childbearing Centers, we ensure appropriate and safe care. Our practitioners also maintain excellent communications with outstanding local physicians and area hospitals should consultation, referral or transfer of care be necessary. Ballard House has spacious home - like suites where women can give birth in private and intimate surroundings. You are encouraged to wear your own clothes, bring your own food and create a space that is personal and familiar. We offer women a chance to reclaim birth through the support of caring providers who honor birth as a unique life event.
