| Overview: Nestled in the heart of the historic district, 82 Queen's beautiful buildings are situated on the site of the former Schenckingh's Square; part of the original walled city of Charles Towne. The Square dates back to the 1600's when South Carolina was just a newly formed colony. The land was granted to Barnard Schenckingh, an immigrant from Barbados. The building had a guesthouse, slave quarters, kitchen, carriage house and a walled garden. The property stayed in the Schenckingh family for decades. 82 Queen Street was sold in 1792. It had many different owners over the next half century; housing businesses like a furniture store, an upholstery shop, a leather shop, a bookstore and a dry goods store. The Great Fire of 1861, completely destroyed 82 Queen Street. It lay in ruin for eight years.
