| Overview: Aerie classes are interactive, challenging and fun. They are designed for people who do not have the luxury of 911,and who must improvise with the gear on-hand. Aerie instructors teach from the understanding that the majority of backcountry injuries and illnesses are preventable. Most that do occur begin as relatively minor conditions (blisters, abdominal discomfort) that, if assessed early, are treatable in the field. At the other end of the spectrum, some conditions are absolutely untreatable in the backcountry and require extended, often complex evacuations. Aerie courses prepare students for this spectrum by teaching injury and illness prevention, patient assessment, improvised care, long-term patient management and the thought processes that are unique when caring for patients in remote settings. We teach from our experience as professional care providers and outdoor leaders. We believe that wilderness medicine is defined more by a decision-making process than by any particular physical skill or technique taught during the class. These decisions include the need for evacuation and considerations for long-term patient care. We also believe there is a tendency in the wilderness medicine industry to define itself as extreme and somehow entirely distinct from more front-country care. Some providers of wilderness medicine courses teach more "advanced" techniques for WFR and WEMT classes than we feel is appropriate. ... | |
