Overview:
The Autonomous Undersea Systems Institute (AUSI) was chartered in the State of New Hampshire in August 1993, and was granted not-for-profit status (501C3) in April 1995. Until January of 1996, it remained relatively inactive. Since that time, the Institute has initiated a number of programs related to its charter. AUSI has been mainly funded through grants from the Office of Naval Research and the National Science Foundation. AUSI also provides its facilities and expertise to support research programs at other institutions and AUSI continues to organize and conduct International Symposia on Unmanned Untethered Submersible Technology. Richard Blidberg, the Director of AUSI, was involved in establishing the Marine Systems Engineering Laboratory (MSEL), with Dr. Robert W. Corell, at the University of New Hampshire in 1976. Dick Blidberg managed MSEL for 19 years. As Director of AUSI, he continues to draw on his experience with autonomous systems, as well as the experience made available by the AUSI Board of Directors. Steven Chappell, Software Systems Engineer, has been with MSEL and AUSI for over twenty years. AUSI is currently located in a facility on three acres of land near the University of New Hampshire. The facility includes approximately 2000 square feet of office and laboratory space.
