| Overview: In 1992, my husband and I were working and living in New York City. We had both grown up in the Northeast corridor and had had enough of the congestion, noise, and dirt. We decided to plan ahead for retirement by setting our sights on a western ski town. We wanted an uncrowded, unspoiled place where we could build a slopeside home with an inspiring view of the natural landscape. We hoped to avoid the glitz of Aspen, the condos of Vail and Big Sky, the close proximity to Salt Lake City of Alta, Snowbird, and Park City, and any lift lines longer than 30 seconds. After perusing ski magazines and other collateral material, we decided to focus on six Rocky Mountain locales: Telluride and crested Butte in Colorado, Jackson Hole and Grand Targhee in Wyoming, Sand Point/Schweitzer in Idaho, and Whitefish/Big Mountain in Montana. We took several weeks to visit our target towns and selected Whitefish as far and away the best choice for our needs. We had eliminated Telluride because of its developing resemblance to Aspen; Crested Butte because of its emphasis on extreme skiing and seeming lack of architectural planning; Jackson Hole mainly because of the expense of view properties; Grand Targhee because of the commute from the nearest village (Driggs, Idaho); and Schweitzer because of our preference for the atmosphere of Whitefish compared with Sand Point. | |
