| Overview: The Waltham Philharmonic Orchestra began in 1985 under the direction of local musicians David J. Tierney, Music Director of St. Mary Church, and Harold W. McSwain Jr., Pastor of the First Congregational Church. Made up of almost 60 semi-professional and amateur musicians, the orchestra's mission is to provide Waltham's citizens with the opportunity to perform in and attend classical concerts of the highest quality. WPO players come not only from Waltham but travel from Boston and all its surrounding communities in order to be a part of this thriving ensemble. The orchestra members are of many different ages and professions. The WPO's annual Concerto Competition provides a vehicle for aspiring young musicians to perform solo works with an orchestra. We also give the orchestra's highly skilled musicians that same opportunity. In its early seasons the Philharmonic enjoyed an affiliation with Boston College, whose students performed with amateur and professional players from the local area. For two seasons the Waltham Philharmonic played a festive Fourth of July concert on the Waltham Common, complete with fireworks. In 1990 the Board of Directors elected David Tierney as the group's sole Music Director. Upon his resignation the Board of Directors, in consultation with orchestra members, elected Waltham native William Guerin as its third Music Director.
