Overview:
The company name comes from James J. Bissett Jr., the founder of the company. In 1964, with his wife Joan, they made the decision to go from a part time operation of selling and delivering plant material to a full time nursery business.Operating out of their three acre backyard, Jim and Joan began developing the wholesale redistribution concept, a concept the company continues to develop today. With a steady growth in business, they expanded the operation in 1970 to include a container growing facility with the acquisition of 8 acres of land on Long Island Avenue in Holtsville. This farm is now solely perennial production and was expanded to 12 acres with an additional purchase in 1998. Long Island continued to grow as did business and in 1973, Bissett Nursery became Bissett Nursery Corporation.
